Having SSL enabled on your website is similar to having windows in your house to stop the rain from leaking inside. Seriously, SSL is really that important for your website, and each website that we build here at RelayMA comes standard with one, at no additional cost to the customer.

So what is SSL, and what benefits does it carry for the website? SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, and this technology has been around for more than 20 years, yet its’ adoption has been slow, due to difficult integration initially. Nowadays, you can easily receive an SSL certificate from a service like Let’s Encrypt, free of charge, quite quickly. The barriers have quite literally have been nearly obliterated, in order for everyone to be able to use it.

The main benefit of SSL is that it encrypts sensitive data such as credit cards and passwords while they are traveling from computer to computer to your customer. This makes it impossible for any malicious third-party to intercept and steal any data or identities from your customers. However, even if you do not have or store any critical information such as those mentioned above, it is still vitally important to have a certificate, for two main reasons.

First, Google will label your website as insecure, because it will notice that you are using HTTP, instead of HTTPS. In 2018, Google started issuing a warning that millions of sites would soon be labeled as insecure, due to them using the older HTTP protocol. This means that Google’s Chrome and many other modern browsers will automatically show an insecure warning before the customer can continue to your website, if you don’t have an SSL certificate. Having such a message displayed causes most people to flee your site quickly - no one wants to risk getting exposed.

Secondly, HTTPS and SSL is a must if you want to get great SSL for your website’s content. Having one will tell Google that you are a trustworthy website, and your pages will be indexed as usual. Google even offers websites that have the certificate a slight boost in SEO indexing, potentially placing you ahead of your competition that might not be secured. If you are smart website owner, you realize that any SEO is good SEO, and this is a great way to improve your existing ranking.

So as explained, it is vital that you get SSL if you don’t already. Here at RelayMA, we make sure every website that comes out of our office in encrypted and secured, regardless of the website’s content or service. Even when we are prototyping a website for a consumer to provide feedback on, we make sure SSL is enabled and the website is secured. It is the only way to do business and create lasting connections with clients.
